My definition of elegy would be "an emotional, formal poem or song."
Example:
"Tell me which way the wind blows,
Where do the leaves go,
Cause my love for you hasn't changed.
Still left in confusion,
Where's our conclusion,
Cause my love for you hasn't changed."

Significance of the Term:
It's important to know this word because if we put emotional words into our poem, people could feel our sadness and feel sympathetic or even empathetic and relate to their own issues.
