My definition of speaker would be "a person who speaks to an audience."
Example:
"Family, friends, peers. We've gathered here today to attend the death of a very special person to us." -little chattering- "Though some of may not know him, please be respectful and shush." -chattering stops- "Thank you...."
Significance of the Term:
It's important for us to know this word because in poetry, usually the author is the speaker, the person telling the poem. For us to understand the speaker, we must re-read the poems and try to figure the message that is being sent.
